A recent analysis has revealed that the market for counterfeit UK Premier League football shirts is valued at an astounding €180 million, which is equivalent to $238 million. This represents nearly one-third of the total legitimate sales.
Corsearch conducted a recent study which estimates that these counterfeiters are producing and selling and “estimated 16.2 million shirts per year, with an average price of €11 each” (securingindustry.com, 2024). The legitimate sales of UK Premier League football shirts are 10 million shirts per year, with the average price per shirt being €76.50.
According to Corsearch, this means that, on average, counterfeit football shirts are sold at 86% less than the price of legitimate ones; for every one real shirt sold, there is over one and a half fake shirts in circulation.
These Premier League brands are constantly facing issues trying to protect the football club’s identity and revenue. As a result of counterfeiting, Premier League clubs are estimated to lose €246 million annually in football shirt sales. This figure doesn’t even factor in the potential damage to their brand from being associated with an inferior product.
